Faculty Background

The Faculty of Veterinary Science of Banadir University was established in September 2011 to develop an academic qualification in veterinary medicine and animal production that will contribute to a better livestock economy in the Somali society.

The Board of Veterinary Administration, Academic Veterinary Committee and Teaching Staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Science are committed to move forward and make changes.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science offers the following academic subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Nutrition, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Infectious Diseases, Clinics (including surgery), Poultry Science and Meat Inspection as well as animal.

Husbandry subjects of Nutrition, Farm management, Milk and Meat Production, Poultry Production, Beekeeping, Fodder production, Range management, Environmental education.

The Board Veterinary Administration, Academic Veterinary Committee and Teaching Staff will make every effort to generate an environment conducive to teaching and learning with happiness and interest.

Importance of the Faculty

The Faculty of Veterinary Science is important for Somalia as it contributes to the development of the livestock industry in which 60 to 65% of Somali population depends on directly or indirectly. The Faculty creates an attractive environment for learning and research but also very demanding as it requires a high level of dedication and skills to produce high quality doctor of veterinary medicine and husbandry.


Strive to produce high quality veterinary education and produce competent Doctors in Veterinary Medicine or in Animal Husbandry. Continuously upgrades the quality and the quantity of livestock production in order to improve the economy of the pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and generally the wealth of the entire population of Somalia.


The Faculty provides educational programs and services which consist of lifelong learning that would facilitate occupational success and promote economic development. The curriculum outlines for the students a solid foundation in general education (English, Math, Physics, Islamic Studies and Computer science) and basic science (Biology, Zoology, chemistry and Botany) courses that would help them attain a high standard veterinary and husbandry education.

The veterinary and husbandry courses are designed to provide the students with concepts and skills as outlined by the by Board of veterinary administration, academic Veterinary committee and teaching staff of the Faculty.

This policy is honored by the veterinary and husbandry education program. The purpose of an Essential Functions List (see below) is to allow students who are considering to study.

The major objectives of the Program

1. Provide the opportunity for the students to gain knowledge and skills that allow them to secure gainful employment as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Animal Husbandry upon graduation.

2. Adequately prepare students for successful completion of Veterinary and husbandry National Examination upon graduation.

3. Provide qualified graduate students to work in the livestock industry to contribute to economic development and growth.

The Secondary Objectives of the Program

1. Provide students with an appreciation to the field of veterinarians or husbandry as a profession and their responsibilities.

2. Provide graduate veterinarians and husbandry the opportunities to continue education in the preferred fields

Scientific Skills for Veterinary Students

Students should understand that preparation, dedication and commitment are essential for professional success and fulfilling works with others, particularly colleagues and livestock owners.

The students must be physically fit and have adequate computer skills at the time of admission to the faculty.

Students are issued with the following items

Academic Year

The New Academic year starts from September to July of every year where two Semesters are in a year. The first Semester is from September to December and the 2nd Semester from February to July.

There are several breaks of midterm exam and holiday for 15 days of each in January and a midterm exam of 15 days in July. The Annual holiday of one month is in August.

The course of the Faculty has 4 years which is divided into 8 Semesters Students who complete the course are awarded a degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine) or in Animal Husbandry. The degree has been accredited by the Ministry of High Education in Somalia.


General Admission criteria

Students should be good in science and have good discipline to be admitted to the Faculty. The student must be sure to get a strong foundation in the basic science as well.

1. English

2. Chemistry (General and organic)

3. Biology (General) or Zoology

4. Physics (General)

Admission test Scores

Faculty of Veterinary Science requires that applicants take a standardized test.

The most required is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The candidate must fulfill the following conditions:-

 Have a Secondary School Certificate with pass marks of 70% to 75% and more marks of 80% and above in Biology, Botany, Zoology and Chemistry.

 Application Letter submitted before August for the academic year starting in September.

 One file and 4 passport size photos.

 The original Secondary School Leaving Certificate must be brought.

 Be obligate to bring a good behaviour (conduct) letter.

 Be obligate to bring Guardian Letter and Sponsorship letter.

 Payment of the Admission and the Academic Fee.

Admission Rules and Regulations

The admission process of the faculty program is published in Student Handbook.

The admission and the registration of the students are in accordance with the Faculty of Veterinary Science policies, standards, and principals.
